He's baaaaack!
But this time it isn't a spooky Freddie Kreuger thing, it's a hoped for development. A return to the Straight Talk that was Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) byword until he got tangled up with The Decider.
Moderate-leaning McCain fans, Democrats and Republicans alike, were dismayed when he made nice with Rev. Jerry "Winky Dinky is Gay" Falwell, and stayed within pucker distance of Bush's backside hoping to "position himself as the natural heir" to Bush in 2008.
Now, however, "McCain's Stand On Detainees May Pose Risk for 2008 Bid." (WaPo) gives us reason to hope that McCain has found his way out of the Shrub's wasteland.
Hallelujah!
Not because it may pose a risk to McCain's bid for the presidency, but because he is willing to take the risk, to stand up for what he believes.... by not allowing the Bush administration to "interpret the Geneva Conventions as it sees fit."
Even though McCain risks losing the support of the supposed Bush base.... a base adverse to bigger government, huge deficits, and nation building.... in truth many in this base no longer worship at the tawdry, principle-trashed Bush altar.
And, it isn't just treatment of detainees that hangs in the legislative balance, "the legislative battle will shape what limits the administration will face on its anti-terrorism policies in the final two years of Bush's term."
Just like the power-hungry, spoiled frat boy he is, someone needed to set limits for The Decider. The seasoned McCain has at last said enough, and along with all 44 Senate Democrats and enough Republican supporters like Lindsey Graham (SC) to command a Senate majority, is stalling Bush's plans.
Truer words were never spoken than those of McCain's top political adviser who observed, "When John does what he thinks is right, it usually works out in all ways, including politically."
To McCain we say about his return to his Straight Talking ways..... "Stay the course."
